AI readiness for investment managers
Direct answer: AI readiness is not about tooling. It is the firm's ability to deploy AI safely and usefully inside real workflows. It rests on five dimensions: workflow clarity, data foundation, review and approval, security and governance, and team posture. Where you score on each one decides your first project, not the other way around.
The five dimensions
| Dimension | What ready looks like | Common gap |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow clarity | Top workflows are documented end to end | Tribal knowledge, no map |
| Data foundation | Source documents are findable and versioned | Files scattered across drives, email, CRM |
| Review and approval | Named reviewers and a clear sign off path | Approval happens in inbox threads |
| Security and governance | Private deployments, RBAC, audit logs | Public chatbots used for client data |
| Team posture | Operators see AI as leverage, not threat | Pilot blocked at adoption, not technology |
How to read your score
Score each dimension 0 (not yet), 1 (partly), or 2 (yes). A combined score under 7 means start with workflow mapping and a single source of truth, not a tool selection. Between 7 and 13 means pick one workflow and run a contained pilot with a named reviewer. Above 13 means you are ready to extend the pattern across IR, deal, research, and reporting.
What readiness is not
Readiness is not a model selection, a vendor contract, or a slide about generative AI in the next strategy update. A firm with a clear DDQ workflow, a versioned answer library, and a named reviewer is more ready than a firm with three AI vendors and no documented process.
What to do this week
Pick one workflow that runs at least weekly and has a named reviewer. List the inputs it depends on and where they live. Write down the approval path. If those three things are clean, you have a viable first project. If they are not, that is the project: clean them up before any tool decision.
